Abusive relationships often follow a typical pattern with three phases:

  • Phase I: Tension Building – This is when stress and strain begin to build before an abusive occurs. It can feel like walking on eggshells.
  • Phase II: Acute or Explosion – When an act of physical, mental, emotional, or sexual abuse occurs or is threatened by an intimate partner, spouse, ex-spouse, current or ex-dating partner.
  • Phase III: Honeymoon – Characterized by affection, apology, or, alternatively, ignoring the incident, this phase marks an apparent end of violence, with assurances that it will never happen again.
